What is a Resting ECG?
An electrocardiogram, often referred to as ECG or EKG, is a non-invasive test performed while the patient is still. It records the heart’s electrical activity and helps clinicians diagnose cardiac abnormalities like arrythmias or coronary heart disease.
A standard resting 12-lead ECG uses 10 electrodes, also known as “ECG stickers.” These ECG electrodes are placed on the skin to capture heart signals from 12 different angles. Six electrodes are positioned across the chest and four on the limbs.
When is a Resting ECG Ordered?
Clinicians typically order a resting ECG if a patient is evaluating key signs and symptoms. Common reasons include:
Key Symptoms:
- Chest pain, heart palpitations, or irregular heartbeats
- Shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting
Clinical Scenarios:
- Suspected heart disease and arrhythmias
- Monitoring chronic conditions and medication effects
- Pre-surgical evaluation and routine screening
- Emergency situations in the case of a heart attack or acute symptoms
Snap vs. Tab Electrodes for
Resting 12-Lead ECG
Both snap and tab electrodes are widely used in resting ECGs. The choice depends on workflow, connector style, and facility preference.
Snap Electrodes
Best for:
- Fast-paced environments where quick application and removal are needed
- Patients who require frequent lead adjustments
Advantages:
- Secure snap-style connection
- Compatible with many leadwire systems
Tab Electrodes
Best for:
- Traditional resting ECGs using alligator-clip leads
- High-volume diagnostic environments
Advantages:
- Flat, flexible tab for easy clip attachment
- A cost-effective choice for routine ECG testing
Why Electrode Quality Matters in
Resting ECGs
Accurate resting ECG results depend on the quality and consistency of electrodes used. Consistent adhesion, stable gel formulas, and low-noise sensors help ensure clean, reliable traces. In a 12-lead setup, signal consistency across all 10 electrodes is critical.
Nissha Medical Technologies offers a range of diagnostic ECG electrodes designed for resting ECGs. Our resting snap and tab ECG electrodes options are designed to support clear, dependable tracing, and efficient workflow.

Snap ECG Electrodes:
- Ag/AgCl sensor for high signal accuracy
- High chloride wet gel provides fast and clear traces
- Self-adhering design helps reduce artifacts and repeat testing
- Available in easy-to-peel vinyl tape or occlusive foam

Tab ECG Electrodes:
- Conductive solid gel requires minimal cleanup
- Pliable, conforming substrate consistent for skin contact
- Patented traction liner keeps tabs from sliding and prevents packs from sticking together
